Charles Kreinbucher ’26 pitched Coinbase Global, Inc. (NASDAQ: COIN) on February 23, 2026 to the Bucknell Student Managed Investment Fund. Coinbase is a leading U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange and financial technology platform that provides trading, custody, staking, and infrastructure services for digital assets. As one of the most regulated and institutionally trusted platforms in the industry, Coinbase plays a critical role in bridging traditional finance with the growing digital asset ecosystem.
Chuck’s investment thesis was three-pronged. First, Coinbase possesses a durable competitive moat driven by regulatory compliance, institutional-grade custody solutions, and strong brand trust, positioning the company to benefit as the industry matures and regulatory clarity improves. Second, Coinbase stands to capture structural growth in the digital asset economy, acting as a “toll booth” on increasing trading activity, stablecoin adoption, tokenization, and institutional participation. Third, the company has meaningfully diversified its revenue streams beyond transaction fees, with growing subscription and services revenue including staking, custody, and stablecoin-related income, which enhances earnings stability and operating leverage across market cycles.
Given improving profitability trends, expanding EBITDA margins, and the market’s continued under appreciation of Coinbase’s role as core digital financial infrastructure, Chuck holds a bullish stance on COIN, but is holding off on voting to buy for later in the semester to see where regulatory clarity could place the exchange.
